Squadron Leader George L. Johnson DFM
Joining the RAF in 1940, George Johnson served with 97 Squadron before
joining 617 Squadron. Bomb aimer on American Joe McCarthy’s Lancaster AJ-T,
they attacked the Sorpe Dam, for which he was awarded the DFM.
Commissioned a few months later, George retired from the RAF in 1962.

Shannon DSO, DFC (pilot). JAck Buckley, DFC (Rear Gunner). Guy Gibson, VC,

Moonlight Run (Dambusters) by Ivan Berryman In one of the finest portrayals of the Avro Lancaster,
"Moonlight Run" depicts the aircraft of Fl. Lt.
"Mickey" Martin (ED909 AJ-P) at the moment of release of the
Wallace Bomb during the Dams raid on the Ruhr in 1943. With only the
gentlest of moonlight rippling over the dark water of the Mohne, this
dramatic picture plays homage to the impossible low altitudes and high
speeds that were necessary to complete successfully their heroic
mission. A stark and refreshing treatment of a subject at the hearts of
all aviation historians.
Gibson VC by Graeme Lothian The night of the 16th May 1943 saw 19 modified Lancasters of the
specially formed 617 squadron set out to breach the Ennepe, Eder, Mohne
and Sorpe dams in Westphalia, Germany. The mission was led by Wing
Commander Guy
A Lincolnshire Sunset 1944 by Gerald Coulson As the sun is setting in the early part of 1944 over their
Lincolnshire airfield, the ground crews make final preparations to the
Lancasters' of 617 squadron. Beneath the aircraft crews ready themselves
for long, gruelling night operation over occupied Europe. Produced to help raise funds for the RAF Benevolent Fund this superb
new edition is a tribute to all those who flew with RAF Bomber Command.
Each print is personally signed by prominent aircrew all of whom flew with
617 squadron during WWII. This is the first edition in a trilogy to be
released this year. |

Dambusters - The
Impossible Mission by
Robert Taylor.Dinghy
Young, flying Lancaster AJ-A, heading through flak and machine gun fire
towards the Mohne Dam at precisely 60ft, has just released his
cylindrical, hydrostatically-triggered bouncing bomb – clearly visible
against the huge splash created as it hits the water. The mighty Mohne Dam
has but moments to live.
Legends of the Air by Philip West. Probably the most famous RAF Squadron in history, mainly due to the
audacious Dambuster raid in 1943. Other notably successful missions
flying their Avro Lancaster bombers included precision raids on the
mighty German battleship Tirpitz, U-boat pens, railways, V-weapons
sites, canals and bridges. Through their skill and bravery 617 Sqn.
crews received many high honours including V.Cs for Wing Commander Guy
Gibson and Wing Commander Leonard Cheshire. |
| The Avro Lancaster was possibly the most
versatile and successful bomber aircraft ever and certainly became the
backbone of RAF Bomber Command during WWII. Being able to deliver a
greater payload than any other aircraft of the War; the Lancaster took
part in nearly every night bombing raid on Europe and crews would operate
whenever there was a possibility of reaching their target. Indeed the
unrelenting determination and courage of these men paved the way for the
ultimate liberation of Europe.
Of all the crews of RAF Bomber Command 617 Squadron are perhaps the
best known. Famed for their expertise in precision bombing and utilising
many of the developments of Barnes Wallis, they took part in some of the
most famous and daring operations of the war - the sinking of the Tirpitz
and the legendary attack on the Ruhr Dams are just two of the many
successes that the squadron were involved in. Many of the crews themselves
such as Guy Gibson, Leonard Cheshire and Bill Reid became household names
and their exploits are well documented.
Target Bearing 270º by Robert Taylor Latest release by Robert Taylor commemorating the 60th anniversary of
the sinking of the Tirpitz After several unsuccessful attempts to sink the German battleship
Tirpitz, on 12 November 1944, the royal Air Force set about finishing the
job. Flying the outward leg of the mission circuitously and at low
level to avoid radar detection, Lancasters of 9 and 617 Squadrons effected
complete surprise, approaching the Norwegian fjord at tromso from the
east. Climbing to 12,000 feet as they assembled for the target run,
each Lancaster was armed with a single 12,000lb "Tallboy" bomb,
the most powerful armour piercing ordnance of world war Two. Flying
through a heavy barrage of anti-aircraft fire, one by one each Lancaster
released its deadly cargo, the bomber stream taking just three minutes to
thunder through the target area. It was all over; a direct hit left
Tirpitz a sinking wreck, her side ripped open by the devastating
blast. Eleven minutes later she capsized and slid into the icy
waters of Tromso fjord.
Tallboy Raid by Keith Aspinall Lancaster bombers of 617 squadron escorted by Spitfires
Sinking the Tirpitz by Nicholas Trudgian
After attempts spanning four years, on 12th November 1944, Lancasters
of Number 9 and 617 Squadrons successfully attacked the German
battleship Tirpitz in Tromso Fjord, Norway. Led by Wing Commander
James Tait, using the 12000lb 'Tallboy' bomb devised by Barnes Wallis,
the Lancaster crews devastated the huge ship in a massive aerial
bombardment, the Tirpitz capsizing and sinking inside just eleven
minutes. Signed by Tony Iveson, Willie Tait, Willibald
Völsing.
The Sinking of the Tirpitz by Frank Wootton
Also signed by five 617 squadron Aircraft captains on the raid
including Group Captain "Willie" Tait DSO, DFC, ADC.
Welcome Home by Stephen Brown
A
flak-damaged Lancaster of 617 Squadron struggles across the airfield
perimeter as it returns to base after a precision raid over enemy
territory. After writing a new chapter in aviation history with the
famous Dams Raid of May 1943, 617 Squadron went on to execute many more
daring operations including the sinking of the Tirpitz. Often flying
specially modified Lancasters with enlarged bomb bay doors to accommodate
the huge 12,000lb Tallboy, they specialised in high value precision
targets such as canals, tunnels and U-Boat pens.
Bomber Force by Nicholas Trudgian
The tension is electric; slowly they climb to circle the airfield
while the entire squadron gets airborne. Below, the countryside
reverberates with the sound of roaring Merlin engines. Nicolas
Trudgian recreates the familiar scene in a stirring painting which
captures all the awesome reality of the mass take-off by RAF Lancaster
bombers of 617 Squadron.
