Naval art prints of the Fairey Albacore. Fleet Air Arm Torpedo Bomber.  The Albacore was intended to be the replacement to the Fairey Swordfish, and first flew in December 1938. and entered service with the Fleet air arm in March 1940 with 826 squadron. Production of the Albacore continued until 1943 and a total of 800 were built. They continued on active service until mid 1943.  with operations in the middle east and European theatres.  from carriers and air fields. A small number of Albacore continued in service in a anti submarine role until the end of 1944.

Crew  Three.  Speed: 161 mph at 4,500 feet.  Ceiling 20,700 feet.  range: 930 miles.   Armament: One fixed .303 machine gun in wing one or two .303 machine guns in rear cockpit. One 1610 lb.  18-inch torpedo or 2,000 bomb payload.

The Illustrious class carrier HMS Formidable prepares to recover a Fairey Albacore TB MK1 of No. 826 sqn. following a vital sortie against Italian shipping at the start of the Battle of Cape Matapan in march 19041. Led by Lt Cdr W G H Saunt DSC, Formidable's Albacores launched torpedo attacks on the battleship Vittorio Veneto, seriously damaging her, despite coming under intense anti aircraft fire and a splash barrage of 15-inch shells.
